Social Media Karma: Be Proactive

Thu, Aug 28, 2008

Social Media

guy-kawasaki.jpg Last month, I said to Guy Kawasaki on Twitter that, “Karma is a Mofo”. He tweeted me back and said, “That is a great quote. I am going to steal that”. Yes, I was totally stoked when I read that. It got me thinking. Many social media networking sites have sections for recommendations or referrals. And most people have very few recommendations or referrals from friends, clients or associates posted if not none. I am guilty of this myself. Many of my profiles have zero to a couple at most. And I have given out very few myself. But Rudy, you have so many friends and contacts on these networks. What gives? I don’t know but I want to change that.

As the Social Media Guru of Trulia, I have over 500 “friends” on facebook, 227 on Linkedin, 947 followers on Twitter. If I can just complement one person or or share a positive experience or story about them every now and then, it would be great. I’ll try. But being as busy as I am, I should be finished in a couple of years or so. So please don’t feel slighted if I don’t get to you until next year :) Acknowledging our friends and business associates that we so dearly cherish can go a long way. It might help them get their next job or impress a potential client. Lot’s of work to do.  This will be interesting.

Since Linkedin serves as our virtual resume, I’ll start there.

I just recommended 2 people I admire on Linkedin today :) Can you guess who they are?

I’m jumping off my chair with my arm up in the air saying (me, me, me!! I know….pick me) :) Thanks Rudy - if I keep complimenting you, you’re head will get to big to get into the Trulia Costume (what is that thing called anyway?) - you are DA BOMB!!

This morning one of my coworkers and I were discussing Trulia, and I told her I wished it had been around when I was house shopping myself. She hadn’t seen it yet, so I told her about some of it’s interesting differences and then mentioned Rudy from Trulia who’s wife recently had twins, and how they struck me as a friendly company what with all the silliness with their mascot costume … She asked how I knew some of this stuff and I told her, “Easy, Twitter.”

PS, LOVE Ines!! And DARN, I could have Seesmic’d this! ;)

That is a wonderful post Rudy and Ines is wonderful and I just love her. I enjoy the banter we all do on Twitter and commenting on facebook. Hmm I do not think we are Linked IN. Each place does have its own place. I know Pat Kitano says LinkedIn is your resume and I have to work also at recognizing people who make a difference in my life.

Ines found herself, but I know Matt Fagioli personally, so seeing his mug on this blog is well, it’s seeing his mug on this blog. I think you chose well, hopefully, you’ll include my name in there … one day.

A guy can dream can’t he.

@Ines - Luckily, I don’t wear the “markerman” superhero outfit. It was really enjoyable writing a recommendation for you - just felt good. I can’t wait to do more….

@Sarah - Yeah, Twitter has really come a long way. Although some might disagree, actual meaningful conversations are happening there - or at least are started there. I’ve met some great people and look forward to letting them know how I feel. And yes, the culture at Trulia is great and the team is fantastic. Ines Rocks……Seesmic a reply :)

@Chris - Thanks Chris! Thanks for the Linkedin invite, we’re connected now :) Linkedin is our online resume and a place to connect with other business professionals - who just may be looking for a home :) Each network has it’s own uniqueness - the challenge is to learn how to harness the power embedded deep inside each one. That part is what keeps me interested - finding out how to make each site and tool work for me. Hopefully, I can share my findings with all of you…..Pat and his handsome twin - Kevin - is a great person to know and learn from…..

It is almost scary when I looked at the post and said, oh, it’s Matt and Ines… :) But both are more than worthy to be looked up upon.

    Great concept Rudy

I have been wondering about this for years. I am glad you brought it up to everyone. I too will make a better effort to endorse my friends and colleagues. I have been asked a few times for recommendations from friends but this is usually because they were unemployed. Perhaps a more proactive approach to this will help us all avoid being in that situation at all. Nice post Rudy.
