The Cedar River flooding in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is reaching historic proportions. According to AP reports, over 3,000 homes and 9,000 residents have been evacuated. Brian Pierce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Davenport said, “We are seeing a historic hydrological event taking place with unprecedented river levels occurring.” Luckily, no deaths or major injuries have been reported from the Cedar Rapids flooding as of this post.
Having experienced a few major floods myself, but nothing like the catastrophic Cedar Rapids flooding, I know how frightening it can be, not to mention how helpless you can feel. Mother nature has a chilling way of giving us a reality check every once in a while. It reminds me that we should all have a contingency plan for natural disasters of this sort. Things like flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, lots of extra water and so on. Having a plan can help keep your family safe.
As a matter of fact, a major storm passed by my area two nights ago and left us with no power for ten hours, from 8pm to 6am. The winds were clocked up to 60mph which resulted in lots of downed trees and power lines. My wife was on her way home from a Mom’s club meeting and what would have normally taken her 10 minutes to get home, took her over an hour as she zig zagged around fallen trees. Even worse, my cell phone was virtually dead so we had limited contact throughout. Not a good feeling. We were unprepared. Now I know what we need for the next time.
We wish all the families in Cedar Rapids, Iowa all the best as they weather this historic Cedar Rapids flooding event. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
