Trulia was selected by the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), New York City’s largest and most prestigious real estate group, to power the first real estate search engine dedicated exclusively to New York City-based listings. REBNY announced (pdf) their intent to build the portal late last year and Trulia was chosen among six finalists to do the job.
What does this mean?
For consumers, the new search engine will bring together residential property listings from REBNY-member real estate brokerage firms onto a single public Web site for the first time. For the non-New York readers out there…it’s worth noting that Manhattan’s hugely important real estate market does not have a widely used MLS that would allow access to all listings through any single Web site today.
Through the REBNY portal, New York home buyers and sellers will have full access to all of Trulia’s real estate tools including: Heat Maps, Real Estate Guides and property listings.
For New York City brokers and agents, they’ll now have a choice. There are few comprehensive options to publish home listings for the New York City market. This competition benefits brokers and ultimately consumers!
See the official press release here (pdf).
Previous coverage of the REBNY portal can be found here and here and here.

Interesting, the big boys at REBNY have found yet another stall tactic to avoid
implementing a proper MLS system.
Using Trulia is a nice step forward in the eyes of the consumer but from an agent’s
point of view it’s still really embarassing how backwater the Manhattan co-broke system
is and seems will stay.
Trulia, welcome to the oligopoly that is is Manhattan’s residential brokerage industry.

REBNY has tried this before, with little luck. Back in 2001, they launched and then aborted a similar project. StreetEasy.com is the best RE site in the area, and will likely continue to be for some time.

Congrats to everyone at Trulia. It is amazing that there was no MLS in place already.

Hey guys, Sean from Trulia here. Thanks for all the positive comments. This is a HUGE deal for all of us @ Trulia, especially those of us in the New York office and we are very excited to partner with REBNY to give consumers an alternative option to search for real estate in Manhattan - finally! We will keep you posted.

There is an MLS in Manhattan. There is a Manhattan Board of Realtors (aka MANAR) we are part of the National Association of Realtors. There are 72 firms who are currently member representing 1100 realtors. We not only have an MLS we also have an IDX which 14 firms are currently using quite successfully. If you would like to know about Realtors in Manhattan as opposed to just talking about REBNY all the time feel free to contact me. Klara Madlin, President -Elect, MANAR or go to http://www.manarrealtor.com
