Fly baby fly - we’ve launched a new Google Earth tool for the uber-techie, hyper-visual among you. Check out your future neighbors’ homes and discover which neighbors have been lying when they tell you that no, for the last time, they do not have a helipad on their roof. Oh yeah, and there’s a practical use to this too; you can use Google Earth with Trulia to make your real estate search 3D! Plus, you’ll receive a daily update of homes that match your search criteria directly to Google Earth.

How does it work? First, you need you have Google Earth installed on your computer. If you don’t have it, download it here. Now you can just go to the RSS pull down menu on the top right of any Trulia search results screen and select “Google Earth” to view your search results. When your results load to Google Earth, you’ll find it in the “Places” section; click on the results to zoom on in. Google Earth will automatically update (much like an RSS feed) with the newest listings that match your search criteria once a day.
If you’re new to all this 3D mapping stuff, be sure to check out the Google Earth blog. Happy Flying!

It doesn’t seem to work well on my Mac with advanced searches. Results show on the web but don’t show in Google Earth(in fact none show).
Tips?

It’s funny you guys have done this. I’m a pretty new Trulia user and I have Trulia open in one monitor and Google Earth open in another and have been copypasting back and forth. I’m very excited to see if this makes things quicker. Good thinking!

Thanks for pointing this out Dan. This seems to be a specific issue with certain Trulia advanced searches on the Mac version of Google Earth. We’ve checked the data KML file and it’s building correctly on our servers, but there seems to be an issue with GEarth requesting it. Inital tests look like the issue might be the length of the URL. We’ll keep working on a fix for you.

Keep bringing on the inovation! This is great.

I’m not sure what we like better the heat maps (which always impress us) or the Google earth integration. We salute you, Trulia… from our geeks to yours, “you rock!”

I may have overlooked this feature, but how do you search just for foreclosures again? (scratching head with confused expression)

No Mac functionality? How come? Are we not geek enough?

I wonder when tools like this will be available for the international real estate market, specifically for countries in Latin America. Google Earth’s resolution is still very poor yet these markets are growing a lot.

This real Estate company in Australia, Toop&Toop Real Estate, did this a few years back when google earth first came out, they have a very interesting interface to google earth. They basically allow one to grasp the location of a property quite well. Its located at http://www.toop.com.au id anyone wants any ideas.

The map that Trulia uses to show the properties is outdated. Our listing in Pleasanton, California shows on the wrong side of town. Please update your base map.

Its not so much the map base but the geocode data that can place you incorrectly on on a map. My site has the same issues at times. It gets even worse when you try to map a listing in a new development where no road date exists.
