Charlie - Thanks for your question. It is true that we will be offering Realtors ways of paying us to display their listings more prominently. However, I would stress two key points on this.
1. Relevance - We only show sponsored results that match the user's search criteria. Our users trust us to show results that are relevant and to do otherwise would betray that trust. (This goes to the point raised in the first comment).
2. Depth of Coverage - (I think this one is more to your point). Our goal is to provide users with access to as many relevant listings as possible. In real estate, every home is a uniquely valuable search result to a user. We therefore plan on continuing our push to get more and more listings on our site. We will always display these listings within our organic search results—free of charge to agents and brokers. In this way, anyone can use Trulia to get free leads. Those who would like more traffic than they get naturally are free to choose from various offerings like sponsored listings.

If I understand your business plan. You want Realtors to give you our data base so you can sell it back to us. How does this differ from Realtor.com and almost every newspaper website in the country?

[...] To nobody’s surprise, Trulia today unveiled sponsored (read paid) listings on the results page of its real estate search engine. Brokers and agents can now pay to have their listings “more prominently displayed” - but what exactly this entails isn’t entirely obvious. Looking at the sceen capture Dan put on their blog I’m not sure I’d want my listings identified quite so blatantly as being ‘Sponsored’ - as a consumer, this is a natural turn off and I would probably unconsciously try to avoid them and opt for the organically returned search results instead.
